The New Hampshire Junior Monarchs are proud to announce that 1998 Premier Defensemen, Tanner Derby of Newburyport, MA has committed to Westfield University in Westfield, MA to continue his hockey and academic career. Derby is unsure of what he will major in starting this Fall, but said he chose Westfield because he liked the campus the most out of the schools that he toured. He also said that he knows it’s where he will succeed the most both academically and athletically.
Derby, who spent 2 years at Berwick Academy before transitioning to Juniors this season playing 32 regular season games for the Premier team says, “The biggest difference from prep to juniors is definitely the physicality of the game in all 3 zones.” The 6’2 defenseman had 5 points during the regular season and 1 goal in 4 games during playoffs. Derby says while playing juniors he has really learned how to play more physical and how to make quicker decisions. “I think my defensive zone play has definitely got a lot better this year too.”
The organization would like to wish Tanner and his family the best of luck as he heads to college this Fall!
